Two Day Conference on Hard Cases and Rational Choice

in Bern, 27th – 28th November 2017

It is our pleasure to announce and invite submissions for a two-day conference on Hard Cases and Rational Choice which will take place on Monday, 27th November & Tuesday, 28th November, 2017 at the University of Bern, Switzerland.

Rationality is a central value of our culture and at the heart of many academic disciplines such as philosophy, economics and psychology.  However, rational decision-making can be difficult for many different reasons. Sometimes it is tough to make a rational choice because one option seems to be neither better, nor worse, nor equally good compared to the other. Such so-called hard cases have attracted a lot of attention among philosophers for they pose particularly fascinating problems for questions of practical reason, the comparability of values and rationality, e.g.: Are all values comparable? Is comparability necessary for rationality? Can rational choice theory accommodate hard cases?

Call for Papers

We invite submissions of abstracts on hard choices, rational decision-making, (in)comparablity of values, rational agency, rational choice theory, practical reasoning and related issues. We also invite submissions featuring empirical work or planned experimental studies on hard cases and rational choice. There will be talks by the three keynote speakers as well as several selected speakers from the Call for Papers. (travel bursaries might be available for students)

If you have any questions about the conference, please send and email to michael.messerli@philo.unibe.ch or kevin.reuter@philo.unibe.ch. (Attendance of the conference is free)
